Por la tarea hoy, mirado un video sobre Extensive reading - My thoughts on the video - I agree that reading for pleasure is important and a better way to learn. I'm more likely to keep at a difficult book if I am enjoying. I used to feel that I had to understand every single word to benefit but now it is all about the gist which is why I am not sure about the 95-98% prior knowledge part. If you had asked me a week ago, I would have said this sounds about right but recently I have been looking at language acquisition and a more immersive experience. Immersion, to me, is a different ratio - but does ratio matter at all? Can it vary? Because if it does matter, then why the Harry Potter book club? That book is sooo hard for me! But it is going to get easier and I like the content. The polyglot who learned to speak Spanish through HP - she didn't know anything to begin with. The guy who learned English through watching friends - same situation. I cannot wait until I can have a full blown conversation in Spanish but (and this is my important but) I want to enjoy the experience of learning - the journey is just as important as the destination and I think everyone's journey is different.
Learning a language is such a journey, isn't it? I feel very lucky to have found such a dedicated group of students to share it with. Hats off to you for diving into your immersion experience!
